Green building rating system is a performance oriented system where points are earned for satisfying the specific criteria. Similar to most green rating systems around the world, rating systems measure a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in key areas: such as energy and water efficiency, material resources used, and indoor environmental quality.

Taking a closer look at the comparison, most green building rating system emphasize on energy efficiency. Delivering energy efficiency can be a two fold approach. Incorporating passive design to reduce the air conditioning capacity or providing provisions for sufficient natural lighting is one and ensuring energy efficient equipment is used in the building is another.
