Interview with Emerson Cup '09 Student Category Winner from De La Salle University - Manila

Stephen Simon Correa, Mark James De Jesus and Roald Yee Dee from De La Salle University won the Excellence Award for the Student Category in the Emerson Cup 2009 in Hyderabad, India last September. Their hands-on experiment of thermal behavior and stratification effect for under-floor air distribution reinforced the need for environment-friendly designs without compromising human comfort.

How did your university find this achievement?
The university was very proud with our achievement especially the Mechanical Engineering Department. We were deeply acknowledged that the award was presented to us during the college graduation program.

What are the highlights of your project that qualified for an endorsement for the Emerson Cup award?
The main highlight of the project is its energy saving capability which can help reduce the energy consumption and, in turn, help preserve our environment by using less fossil fuel. Our project also helps improve the quality of human life by taking into careful consideration the indoor air quality. Our project also adds to the existing stream and body of knowledge regarding the test for thermal stratification.

What is the concept of your project design?
The main concept of our design project is to take advantage of the principle of stack effect, wherein warm air settles over cold air. Instead of placing the air-conditioning unit over the ceiling, we placed it under the floor where it cools the occupied region (ground floor up to 6 feet above) only instead of the entire space. This system was able to produce about 12-19% energy savings. The indoor air quality likewise passed the different standards set by ASHRAE.

Would you encourage other students to join next year’s Emerson Cup competition?
We strongly encourage other students to participate in next year's Emerson Cup competition. Joining the competition would greatly help the students in their pursuit of knowledge. It is actually a great opportunity for them to know more about Emerson and learn more about its latest designs and concepts in technology.
