Technology Update

The Right Technology

In the previous edition of our newsletter, we introduced the concept of modulation in air-conditioning systems. We discussed that fixed speed air-conditioning systems do not match the load requirements when the temperature fluctuates. We also talked about how modulation in air-conditioning systems help modify the capacity of the system to match the load requirements, leading to energy conservation. In this article, let us look at the air-conditioning system that works on modulation to achive the capacity to match load requirements.

The typical choice for homes and commercial spaces has always been Split A/Cs or Individual Room A/Cs and Air Cooled Chillers. However, studies show that Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems using Digital Scroll technology does the job best. As such, the market is shifting from the conventional A/C systems, that is, one evaporator with one condensing unit (see Fig.1) to VRF A/C systems, that is, multi-evaporators to one common condensing unit (as in Fig.2). Here’s why it is so.

Superior comfort

VRF systems provides the user with the most comfortable environment with its precise control that keeps temperature fluctuations to a minimal ±0.5°C. This system can also rapidly achieve the desired temperature for any room after startup, bringing relatively instant comfort to the user.

Better humidity control

Maximum comfort is ensured by the system’s superior dehumidification capabilities. A comfortable humidity level is maintained throughout the seasons, whether it’s the hot summer, the humid rainy season, or the cold winter.

Faster pull down

VRF systems provide better temperature control through two channels – speed and precision. When the air-conditioning system is turned on, the Digital Scroll works quickly to rapidly achieve the requested room temperature, resulting in immediate comfort for the user.

Enhanced building aesthetics

VRF systems enable users to have a fashionable and classy exterior and interior by avoiding the need for several outdoor units that mar the building’s aesthetics. Users can also design and customize their homes according to their preferences.

Energy efficient

The VRF system is extremely intelligent – it has a self-adjusting control that maintains best comfort for the user. VRF systems also modulate the output capacity as per load requirements, thus leading to energy savings.

No interference with home appliances

Unlike other air-conditioning technologies, VRF systems powered by the Copeland Digital Scroll™ emits negligible magnetic waves, meaning that users no longer have to worry about air conditioner interfering with their other home appliances. This also means no more electrical flickers on the television set when turning on/off the air conditioner.

Simplicity & reliability

The beauty of the VRF system is in its inherent simplicity – it has fewer electronic and mechanical system parts. This simple design and architecture means greater reliability and simpler maintenance as well as increased application flexibility. The Copeland Digital Scroll in particular has demonstrated its reliability by surviving rigorous testing under extremely stringent criteria.
